"After multiple conversations with Intel senior management Oracle has decided to discontinue all software development on the Intel Itanium microprocessor. Intel management made it clear that their strategic focus is on their x86 microprocessor and that Itanium was nearing the end of its life.

Both Microsoft and RedHat have already stopped developing software for Itanium. HP CEO Leo Apotheker made no mention of Itanium in his long and detailed presentation on the future strategic direction of HP.

Oracle will continue to provide customers with support for existing versions of Oracle software products that already run on Itanium.

[Shouldn't that topic reside in our newly created "Hardware" forum? Doesn't really sound as if Intel Itanium was Other operating system.]

I've read "HP-UX" between the lines.
HP-UX is the only major Oracle OS that's currently running on Itanium processors.
I would imagine it's quite a blow to them.

Looks like Oracle will be forced to release new product versions on Itanium. Among others, Oracle 12 when it becomes available.

It's official, Oracle 12c on be releases on HP-UX (Itanium):

"Previously, Oracle announced that it would stop developing new versions of its software on Itanium microprocessors. For example, that meant version 12c of the Oracle database due out in early 2013 would not be available on Itanium. However, a judge recently ruled that Oracle has a contract to continue porting its software to Itanium computers for as long as HP sells Itanium computers. Therefore, Oracle will continue building the latest versions of its database and other software covered by the judge's ruling to HP Itanium computers. Oracle software on HP's Itanium computers will be released on approximately the same schedule as Oracle software on IBM's Power systems."
